CURRENT PROJECTS
MONTHLY EVENTS
We have a monthly Sewing Academy program at our Connection Center in Zapopan. We also have one community service outreach per month serving schools, hospitals, churches, rehab centers, shelters, and jails.
CYBER CENTER
In 2020 we are working toward the goal of finishing the Ama Cyber Center in the Connection Center! This will be used for computer literacy training, ESL programs, and virtual satellite classes. It is our hope to launch the cyber center this summer. We still need furniture, network/server supplies, some structural elements, and a printer before we can open. (Total still needed: $2500)
BACK-TO-SCHOOL CHALLENGE
Our goal is to fill 1000 backpacks with school supplies this year--more than triple the 300 we filled last year! To better support the local economy, we hope to purchase as many backpacks from a local backpack vendor in Zapopan, Mexico as possible. (Approx. $20 per backpack)
NAVIDAD PARA LOS NINOS
We are looking for people to sponsor children in Zapopan to receive toys at Christmas time. In an effort to be sustainable, holistic, and supportive of the local economy, all the toys will be purchased in Mexico. ($10 per child)
PREVIOUS PROJECTS
AMA MISSION 2019 | OAXACA CLINICS & BUILDING PROJECT
Our third mission trip abroad took us to Oaxaca, Mexico, to serve a little town still recovering from a devastating 2017 earthquake. The heart of our mission was to care for the people of Santa Maria Xadani and help create sustainable change through medical and dental clinics, skills training, and a community-building project. This trip—made possible by the year-long efforts of nearly 50 volunteers—was life-changing for both the participants and the recipients. More than a thousand people with a vast range of conditions received treatment from our medical and dental teams, while 15 aspiring entrepreneurs learned the skill of tailoring and around 450 children enjoyed crafts and fun activities. Our building project, a much-needed public restroom, will continue to benefit this community for years to come.
AMA MISSION 2018 | ZAPOPAN CONNECTION CENTER
During our second mission trip abroad, to Zapopan, Mexico, we took our community outreach to the next level by offering free medical and dental care, haircuts, and carnival games and inflatables for kids. Our big project was building the Connection Center, a community center for youth and children from impoverished neighborhoods. The Connection Center, which is about 75% complete, hosts weekly classes and includes a 500-book library.
AMA MISSION 2016 | SANTO DOMINGO SCHOOL
In 2016 we took our first mission trip abroad to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. While there we created interactive events for children in the community near the school and spent three days helping to dig out the foundation for the school. We also made a donation to help finish the building of the school which opened in August of 2016.
